December 19, 2011

dr umashankarLittleton Regional Hospital is pleased to announce that Dr. Gopalan Umashankar, MD, neurologist recently passed his exam for certification in the subspecialty of Neuromuscular Medicine. This is the second certification that Dr. Umashankar has received since joining LRH. The first certification was given by ABPN in the subspecialty medical specialty of Neurology.

The purpose of the ABPN's initial certification examination is to test the qualifications of candidates in neuromuscular medicine. Neuromuscular medicine includes the sub-specialization in the diagnosis and management of disorders of nerve, muscle or neuromuscular junction.

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), in concurrence with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), established a Joint Committee on Certification in the Subspecialty of Neuromuscular Medicine on December 2, 2005. This was done to officially establish the field of neuromuscular medicine as a definite area of sub-specialization in neurology and to provide a means of identifying properly trained and experienced physicians in neuromuscular medicine.

To achieve certification in neuromuscular medicine, candidates from the ABPN must hold a valid certificate in neurology or neurology with special qualification in child neurology and fulfill a number of requirements. Dr. Umashankar joined LRH in 2007, coming from Cleveland, Ohio where he held the position of Fellow Clinical Neurophysiology in the Department of Neurology at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Umashankar attended medical school at M.L. B. Medical College, India. He received post-graduate education in Internal Medicine from M.L.B. Medical College and in Neurology from King George's Medical College, Lucknow, India. Dr. Umashankar completed his residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, Arkansas. Dr. Umashankar's specialties include epilepsy and neuromuscular disease.
